Letter from the Chairman
Thank you for your interest in joining the Board of our Foundation Trust.
We take pleasure in providing you with a vision of our organisation and how we perceive the Non-Executive Director position being a significant force within Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in delivering our mission to ensure the provision of high quality, sustainable healthcare services to the community we serve. Our vision is to be one of the best healthcare Trusts in the country.
This is an exciting time to join the Board at Ashford and St Peter’s. This is a challenging period for the NHS with Covid-19 and demand for our services is progressively increasing while the funding position is increasingly stretched. However, Covid-19 has also provided a platform for change and innovation and we believe Ashford & St Peter’s is in a good position to meet these challenges with both in terms of financial and clinical stability.
We achieved a significant turning point at the end of 2019 by securing the funding needed to invest in our buildings and services through land sales. This will enable the Trust to make fantastic changes to improve care for our local people, through new urgent and emergency facilities, better car parking and new digital services.
The Board has an excellent track record in delivering performance and enjoys supportive relationships with the Trust’s Council of Governors who represent the interests of the public, staff and stakeholders within the Trust. We are part of the Surrey Heartlands partnership of local health and care organisations working in partnership with local residents and patients to improve health and care services for local people.
We’ve celebrated a number of achievements at Team ASPH. Following an inspection in July 2018, we were pleased to retain our CQC good rating, with the Critical Care Unit at St Peter’s Hospital achieving an ‘Outstanding’ rating overall. In 2019 the Trust was shortlisted for the CHKS national healthcare efficiency award and more recently the Trust was awarded up to £1.5 Million for a ground-breaking COVID-19 clinical trial.
This Non-Executive appointee will play an essential role in our future success, working closely with me and the Board, bringing independence, external skills and perspectives, and challenge to strategy development. You will share a corporate responsibility for the governance and performance of the Trust in meeting both strategic and operational objectives. You will actively support and promote a positive culture for the Trust in line with our Values and will share the responsibility to act in the best interests of the public and communities we serve.
We are therefore looking for an exceptional individual with a proven track record of working clinically in a senior leadership role. You should bring experience and skills that would enable you to work at Board level, in a large, complex organisation, as you will be expected to have had experience of leading within a governance structure. Ideally we are looking for a candidate with clinical experience to complement our talented board and we would particularly welcome applications from doctors.
We have a preference for local candidates who have commitment to supporting the local health economy but welcome applicants from neighbouring counties or London who would provide a complementary perspective.

We anticipate conducting the recruitment and selection process while maintaining social-distancing guidelines and we have successfully held meetings and interview panels by virtual meetings. We are planning to conduct this recruitment campaign virtually as much as possible. At present our Non-Executive Directors are working remotely during present response to Covid, however we expect to resume on site activities in future and will towards doing that safely.
